Dr. FreedmanAccording to “conventional wisdom,” hard mattresses are best for people with back pain. However, a well-designed study found that, over the period of one month, those sleeping on hard mattresses did slightly worse in terms of back symptoms and sleep quality than those sleeping on either bodyconforming foam mattresses or water beds. It seems that a hard mattress is more apt to exert more pressure on hips, shoulders, and other areas of the body than its softer counterparts. As a result, sleepers are more likely to toss and turn. Another study, however, found that a “pressure relief” mattress did not induce better sleep than a conventional mattress. The best mattress is the one on which you feel most comfortable.
