According to a recent study, exposing children and teenagers to even trace amounts of secondhand smoke lowers their test scores in reading and reasoning tests. It’s estimated that up to 33 million children and teenagers in the United States may be exposed to enough secondhand smoke to adversely affect their reading ability. Researchers checked the blood of 4,399 youngsters for cotinine, a substance created when the body breaks down nicotine. They found that children with more cotinine in their blood tended to score lower on reading, math, and reasoning tests. The higher the cotinine levels, the lower the scores. One reason for the low scores is that animal research suggests that nicotine can alter the structure of the nervous system.
