One common condition encountered among pregnant patients is “pelvic girdle pain,” which causes pain, instability, and limited mobility in any of the three pelvic joints. As the hormone relaxin produced by the ovaries and placenta loosens the ligaments in the pelvic girdle in preparation for delivering the baby, the joints become less stable. As a result, pregnant women often experience pain across the pubic bone in the front, below the stomach, or across one or both sides of the lower back. Pelvic girdle pain is relatively common during pregnancy, and 2%-3% of women may continue to experience it up to a year after the birth. Chiropractic treatment during and after pregnancy may help stabilize the pelvic joints and reduce pain.
Many pregnant women have found that chiropractic adjustments provide relief from the increased low-back pain brought on by pregnancy. Wherever you hurt, at FAMILY PRACTICE OF CHIROPRACTIC, we’re here to help. Please call us at 617.472.4220 to schedule an appointment. We’re located at 112 McGrath Hwy., Quincy.
P.S. Recent research indicates that weight-bearing exercises before pregnancy may help reduce the risk of developing pelvic girdle pain.
