In preparation for childbirth, a pregnant woman’s body releases the hormone called “relaxin,” which relaxes the ligaments in the pelvis and softens and widens the cervix. The pelvis, in particular, experiences a softening and stretching of ligaments to allow the baby easier passage during labor. However, the easier delivery usually equates to weakened sacroiliac joints, which can become painful while walking, standing, or bending. The weight of the growing baby also weakens stomach muscles and places pressure on the lower back. In addition, as the pregnant woman’s center of gravity changes, she may lean backward, causing even more strain. To help with these changing conditions, pregnant women are encouraged to enlist a chiropractor onto their pregnancy support team.
The potential benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy include controlling nausea symptoms, reliving back, neck or joint pain, reducing the time for labor and delivery, and preventing a potential cesarean delivery. P.S. A pregnant woman may develop sciatic pain if the developing baby exerts pressure on her sciatic nerve.
