Because breathing is an involuntary action, we often take it for granted. Fortunately, we have the “phrenic nerve” to thank for controlling the breathing process. This nerve, which begins in the brain and continues down to the C-3 through C-5 cervical spinal roots in the neck (where it splits), controls the diaphragm muscle. During the breathing process, when the diaphragm contracts, the chest cavity expands and makes room for inhaled air. However, if the nerve becomes damaged or irritated, breathing becomes difficult. Symptoms of phrenic nerve irritation include triggering of the hiccup reflex, making the diaphragm contract abnormally and resulting in a small intake of air. Chiropractic treatment may help free the nerve and restore normal breathing.
Chiropractic care is an important tool that helps you get back to enjoying life. Chiropractic is the science of treating ailments by manipulations or adjustments of the spine, skeleton and soft tissues. This conservative and noninvasive approach is based on the scientific fact that your brain controls the proper function of your body via the nervous system. To schedule an appointment for chiropractic care, please call FAMILY PRACTICE OF CHIROPRACTIC at 617- 472-4220. We are located at 112 McGrath Hwy., Quincy.
P.S. In some cases, phrenic nerve injury can make it difficult to breathe while lying down, which can interfere with sleep and cause insomnia.
