Changes in the way that we walk should not be considered to be an inevitable part of aging. However, a slower step, slight limp, or a shuffle or tilt while walking could be indicative of an underlying medical condition that should be diagnosed and treated before it leads to possible limitations of mobility and independence.
With this in mind, the chiropractor carefully assesses each patient’s gait with the possibility of finding a nervous system condition or a bone/muscle/joint disorder. For instance, spinal cord compression in the neck region can interfere with gait and cause loss of balance and coordination. It can also lead to “foot drop,” which is ankle weakness that causes the toe to drag while walking.
Function and balance of the spine and pelvis depend on coordinated support from the feet and legs, especially during gait. It is because of this interdependence that chiropractors must consider the lower extremities when evaluating spinal problems and complaints.
