“Scoliosis” is a threedimensional deformity that occurs when the spine becomes abnormally rotated and curved sideways. This irregular curvature may begin in infancy, the juvenile years, or during adolescence. If allowed to progress, scoliosis can cause the ribs to crowd together on one side, while ribs on the opposite side separate widely. The curvature may force the spaces between the spinal discs to narrow and the vertebrae to thicken along the outer edges of the curve. In a minority of cases, the cause can be traced to habitually poor posture or leglength discrepancy, but most cases are considered to be genetic in origin. Regardless, the chiropractor offers a far more comprehensive assessment of youngsters’ spine health than schools usually provide.
