Dr. FreedmanAs you may already know, “discs” are the pads of cartilage that are positioned between adjacent vertebrae that act as “shock absorbers.” Each disc consists of a fibrous outer ring of cartilage that encases a jelly-like layer of soft cartilage. As we age, intervertebral discs can shrink, which results in a “bulging” or “herniated” disc with vastly diminished shock-absorbing capabilities. If you do not know the difference, a bulging disc is one that extends beyond its normal limits and is considered a common part of aging. A herniated disc (also known as a “ruptured” or “slipped” disc) occurs when the spongy inner portion of the disc extrudes through the disc’s outer layer.

A chiropractor can help address back pain and other herniated disc symptoms. At your first appointment, your chiropractor will go through your medical history, do a physical exam, and perform tests. To schedule an appointment for chiropractic care or acupuncture, please call FAMILY PRACTICE OF CHIROPRACTIC at 617- 472-4220. Our office is located at 112 McGrath Hwy., Quincy. We accept most major insurance plans which included but not limited to Blue Cross Blue Shield, Harvard Pilgrim, Tufts, Mass Health Standard, Neighborhood Health Plan, Medicare, Network Health.

P.S. A herniated disc can impinge upon or irritate a nerve, causing pain, muscle weakness, and/or numbness.
