Dr. FreedmanAs chiropractic patients know, when the chiropractor performs spinal manipulation, the joints often emit a popping sound. This sound, which is similar to the sound of cracking knuckles, brings a sense of relief. Although some people think that cracking one’s knuckles (and other joints) can lead to arthritis, that notion is false. The fact is that there is space within joints that is filled with “synovial fluid,” which acts as a lubricating agent to reduce friction in moving joints. As the joint is stretched and the expanding space creates negative pressure, gases within the fluid (oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide) form into bubbles. As the bubbles collapse, they emit the popping sound that chiropractic patients and knuckle-crackers hear.

Doctors of Chiropractic are trained in problems dealing with the spine, but are formally educated in clinical examination and diagnosis of the entire human body. At FAMILY PRACTICE OF CHIROPRACTIC, we provide chiropractic treatment from acute symptomatic relief to wellness care. Call 617.472.4220 to schedule an appointment. You have nothing to lose – and vibrant health to gain. We’re located at 112 McGrath Hwy., Quincy. We offer computerized spinal scans. If your problem is a chiropractic condition we offer you exceptional service.

P.S. Joint cracking is not the same as the snapping sound that tendons make when they slide over bones. These sounds are heard in the knees and ankles when an individual moves from a sitting to a standing position, and vice versa.
