Dr. FreedmanWhen intervertebral discs “herniate” (bulge or rupture), it is largely due to age-related wear and tear that gradually cracks the disc’s tough exterior and allows the jelly-like material inside to push out. While disc herniation is more commonplace among older adults, children and teens may also experience herniated discs and their consequences (pain due to nerve irritation, muscle weakness, etc.). When discs herniate in the lower lumbar spines of children and teens, it is largely the result of some sort of malformation of the spinal vertebrae. While older adults with herniated discs are more likely to respond to chiropractic treatment, younger patients with herniated discs in their lumbar spines may benefit from more extensive evaluation and treatment.

The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health. At FAMILY PRACTICE OF CHIROPRACTIC, our skilled professional staff is dedicated to addressing your unique needs. We’re located at 112 McGrath Hwy., Quincy, where we are currently accepting new patients. Please call 617.472.4220 to schedule an appointment.

P.S. Disc herniation in older adults is typically caused by repetitive overloading and agerelated loss of water content, causing discs to be less flexible and more prone to tearing and rupturing.
