When scoliosis occurs after puberty, the condition is referred to as “adult scoliosis.” This sideways curvature of the spine may be the result of untreated or unrecognized childhood scoliosis, or it may develop during adulthood. Scoliosis that occurs after age 40, referred to as “degenerative adult scoliosis,” is primarily caused by age and deterioration of the spine. To curb the pain and minimize the disability associated with degenerative adult scoliosis, many people turn to chiropractic treatment. According to a study that examined the effects of chiropractic treatment and exercise on adult scoliosis, researchers found that chiropractic facilitated exercise and weight-bearing activities designed to correct spinal misalignment yielded a 40 percent reduction in pain and a 50 percent reduction in disability.
When adults are faced with scoliosis, the top care of choice is spinal adjustments to restore proper function. Our approach is so different because we are not just treating the spinal deformity, but the other factors that go along with it. At FAMILY PRACTICE OF CHIROPRACTIC, we feel that the best care for a scoliosis condition is prevention. We’re located at 112 McGrath Hwy., Quincy, where we’re currently accepting new patients. Please call 617.472.4220 to schedule an appointment. If your problem is a chiropractic condition we offer you exceptional service.
P.S. If degenerative adult scoliosis is allowed to progress without treatment, breathing can become more difficult, and loss of muscle strength in the lower extremities (due to nerve compression) can make walking difficult.
