Voice For Health – Toeing The Line

Dr. FreedmanDuring an initial chiropractic evaluation, attention is paid to patients’ gait, upright posture, and orientation of their feet. With this in mind, it is interesting to point out that about 20%-30% of the population is born with a foot trait known as “Morton’s foot.” Often also referred to as “Morton’s toe,” this term refers to a second toe that appears to be longer than the first toe, caused by a first metatarsal bone that is shorter than the second metatarsal. As a result, it can contribute to various musculoskeletal issues, as the weight normally carried by the ball of the foot at the base of the big toe shifts to the balls at the bases of the other toes.

There are amazingly 26 bones in the foot, with each and every one capable of causing pain! At FAMILY PRACTICE OF CHIROPRACTIC, we are seriously concerned with the education of our patients about health and the body’s natural state. The next time a health problem strikes someone in your family, or you think you could benefit from a chiropractic check-up, think about the quality and expert care we provide. We invite you to call 617.472.4220 to schedule an appointment. Our office is located at 112 McGrath Hwy., Quincy. We offer computerized spinal scans.

P.S. Morton’s foot/toe is also referred to as “Greek foot” because the ancient Greeks found the trait to be so aesthetically appealing that they incorporated it into paintings and sculptures, including Michelangelo’s David.

Voice For Health – Shooting Pain In The Face

Dr. Freedman

Sudden, shooting pain in the face that feels like an electrical shock is a symptom of “trigeminal neuralgia” (also called “tic douloureux”), which develops as a result of pressure applied to the “trigeminal nerve.” More common among women than men, the pain can be spontaneous or caused by stimulation of the face, such as when ...

Voice For Health – Do You Know Squat?

Dr. FreedmanWhether teenagers are interested in strengthening their bodies for sports or they simply want to look more buff, many perform “squat lifts” as part of their weight training regimens. Starting from a standing position with a weighted barbell on the shoulders or above the head, a squat lift involves bending the knees and hips to lower the torso and accompanying weight and then returning to the upright position. While a “front squat” involves carrying the weight in front of the chest, a “back squat” entails placing weight on the shoulders behind the neck. X-ray analysis of squat lifts reveals that back squats put the lower spine in a more horizontal position, increasing the risk of stress fractures.

Chiropractic treatment is a strong choice for both preventative care and as treatment for injuries that have already occurred. At FAMILY PRACTICE OF CHIROPRACTIC, we take a total look at the total picture and formulate lifestyle changes that will help you maintain your health. We have state-of-theart equipment – let us help you. Please call 617.472.4220 to schedule an appointment. We’re located at 112 McGrath Hwy., Quincy, where our goal is to understand your needs.

P.S. Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to stress fractures of the spine, which is an argument for finding an alternative exercise to squat lifts.
