Dr. FreedmanA “whiplash” injury occurs when the head is jolted violently forward and backward beyond its normal range of motion. This trauma, often associated with automobile collisions, results in damage to the muscles, tendons, and ligaments in the neck. Aside from acute neck pain and restricted neck movement, whiplash symptoms include pain and stiffness that may radiate from the neck to the shoulders, arms, and back, as well as numbness and a tingling sensation in the neck and back. To assess the injury, the chiropractor will use his or her sense of touch (a technique called “motion and static palpation”) to identify areas of restricted joint motion, intervertebral disc injury, muscle spasm, and ligament injury, and then decide on appropriate treatment. An appropriate chiropractic treatment for whiplash is unique to each whiplash injury and is directed at the primary dysfunctions detected during a chiropractic exam.

To schedule an appointment for chiropractic care, please call FAMILY PRACTICE OF CHIROPRACTIC at 617-472-4220. Chiropractors pride themselves on taking a natural, drugless approach to helping their patients reach their health goals. Our family oriented practice is located at 112 McGrath Hwy., Quincy.

P.S. If a whiplash injury has aggravated a herniated (“bulging”) disc that has, in turn, impinged a nerve, the chiropractor may use a non-thrusting type of spinal manipulation called the “flexion-distraction technique.”
