Dr. Freedman“Sciatica” is generally defined as pain along one or both branches of the sciatic nerve that runs from the lower spine to the buttocks and down each leg. These nerves serve as pathways of sensation for the lower extremities. When a disc presses on a nerve root in the lumbar or sacral region, it results in pain and/or muscle weakness.

Causes of “slipped discs” range from bad posture to repetitive heavy lifting. When causes of herniated discs such as tumors, infection, and spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal due to arthritis) have been ruled out, the chiropractor may work to eliminate the causes of future attacks by improving posture, strengthening back and abdominal muscles, and reviewing lifting techniques. For some people, the pain from sciatica can be severe and debilitating. We believe stress, poor posture and accidents, including sports injuries and the like, can all stop the body machine from running smoothly.

At FAMILY PRACTICE OF CHIROPRACTIC, we welcome you to call 617.472.4220 to schedule an appointment. We’re located at 112 McGrath Hwy., Quincy. We offer computerized spinal scans. We are able to adjust patients sitting, standing, or lying down to accommodate any level of discomfort.

P.S. Sitting, prolonged standing, and movements involving flexing of the spine (such as knee-to-chest exercises) may worsen sciatic symptoms.
